Wimbledon 2025: Day 1 Highlights
Grass-court season is in full swing now that Wimbledon has kicked off, with a full Centre Court and loads of fans on Henman Hill. Day 1 had all the usual excitement: some surprising upsets, a few five-set matches, and a big win that shook things up.
Sensational Upset on Court 1
World No. 4 Petra Kazimova fell to 19-year-old qualifier Lily Chen 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. Chen fired 11 aces and saved three match points, becoming the first Chinese teenager to defeat a top-five seed at Wimbledon since Li Na in 2006.
The Marathon Match
Local favourite Dan Evans outlasted American Max Bautista 6-7(5), 7-6(9), 6-7(4), 7-5, 13-11 in four hours 58 minutes. The encounter featured 83 combined winners and set a new Day-1 length record for the Championships.
Djokovic Cruises Under the Roof
Top seed Novak Djokovic needed just 91 minutes to dispatch Felix Henson 6-2, 6-2, 6-1. The Serb extended his Wimbledon first-round winning streak to 18 straight years.
Historic Win for Finland
Finnish wildcard Ella Sorvala stunned No. 23 seed Soraya Martin 6-4, 6-4 on Court 14, marking Finland’s first women’s main-draw victory at Wimbledon since 1989.
Looking Ahead to Day 2
Centre Court will see defending champion Iga Świątek and home-crowd hero Cameron Norrie make their 2025 debuts. Rain is forecast, so expect the roof to feature prominently again.
